Routine beats reactive on solar cleaning because uniform soiling is nearly invisible from the ground, so by the time an array looks dirty you have already given up months of production you cannot get back. A fixed schedule also gives you a clean baseline, which is what makes a gradual decline in your production data readable as an actual fault instead of dust. Because soiling accumulates every dry week and never reverses on its own. A routine schedule keeps the array producing near the level the system was sized for, stops bird droppings and mineral scale from doing permanent damage to the glass, and gives you a consistent baseline to judge whether the system is actually healthy. Reactive cleaning, waiting until the panels look bad, means you have already lost the production.
Most owners clean their panels when the array looks visibly dirty. That is the wrong trigger, for a simple reason: uniform soiling is very hard to see from the ground. By the time an array reads as obviously grimy from the driveway, it has been shaving output for months. Reactive cleaning always arrives after the loss.
A routine schedule inverts that. You set two or three dates on the calendar, you clean regardless of how the array looks, and the soiling never gets deep enough to matter much. The cost per visit is the same either way; what changes is how much production you were running below baseline in between.
There is a second, less obvious benefit. A routine schedule gives you a controlled variable. If you clean on a known cadence, note every cleaning date, and watch your monitoring app, then any production drop that does not follow the soiling pattern stands out immediately, and that is how you catch a failing optimizer, a shading problem from a growing tree, or a panel with a real fault, instead of quietly attributing it to dirt for two years.
Not all soiling is the same, and the mix determines how often you need to be out there.
Airborne dust and particulate. The steady background layer. Road dust, soil dust, combustion particulate. It builds slowly and evenly, and it produces the well-behaved kind of output loss, roughly proportional to how much light it blocks.
Pollen and organic debris. Seasonal and sticky. Pollen bonds into a film once dew wets it and dries, and it does not blow off. Overhanging trees add leaf litter and sap, and sap is genuinely difficult to remove once it has cured in the sun.
Mineral scale. Wherever irrigation reaches the array, or wherever someone has rinsed panels with a garden hose, hard water evaporates and leaves calcium and magnesium bonded to the glass. Scale is cumulative, it does not rinse off, and rain will not touch it. It is the one form of soiling that genuinely gets permanently worse without professional intervention.

If you take one thing from this article: visible droppings on your array are not a scheduling question. They are a call-now item.
Two reasons. First, the electrical one. Cells in a panel are wired in series, and in a series circuit the least-lit element limits the current for the whole chain. A dropping covering part of a single cell forces that cell to restrict the current flowing through every cell in its string. The physical area is tiny; the output consequence is not.
Second, the damage one. A cell that is obstructed while the rest of the string is still driving current through it dissipates that energy as heat, a hot spot. Sustained over months, hot spots can cause encapsulant discoloration, micro-cracking and delamination inside the laminate. That does not come back with a cleaning. Droppings are also acidic and will etch panel glass with prolonged contact.

A cleaning worth paying for is more than a rinse. Here is what the work should look like.
Access comes first. Most residential arrays can be reached with a water-fed pole from the ground or a ladder, which is both safer and gentler than putting weight on a wet, pitched roof. Walking on panels is never acceptable.
Then technique: soft-bristle brush, low controlled water flow, no pressure washing, no abrasives, no household chemicals. Concentrated deposits get a panel-safe pre-treatment with enough dwell time to release without scrubbing. The rinse is deionized or reverse-osmosis purified water, worked from the top of the array downward. Purified water dries clear because the minerals have been stripped out, so the glass is left to air-dry with no squeegee and no towel and no spotting.
And finally, a report on what the cleaning revealed. Cracked glass, a visibly discolored cell, loose conduit, nesting material under the array, or a panel that looked different from its neighbors. Twice a year, this is the only close inspection your array gets. Getting that information is worth as much over the life of the system as the cleaning itself.
