Rain lifts loose dust and leaves traffic film, pollen and mineral scale behind, pressure can force water past the frame seal and scour the anti reflective coating, and a cell converts only the light that reaches it, so soiling is a production loss whether or not you can see it from the driveway. Tap water is the quiet one, because it evaporates off hot glass and leaves its calcium behind as fresh scale that is harder to remove than what you started with.
The three costliest myths are that rain cleans your panels, that a pressure washer is fine because it is just glass, and that cleaning is purely cosmetic. All three are wrong, and each one quietly costs Central Valley homeowners production they already paid for. Here is myth by myth, with what is actually true.
This is the most common one and the most expensive. Rain removes some loose surface dust. It does not remove traffic film, tree sap, pollen bound into a film by dew, mineral scale, or dried bird droppings. Those are the categories that actually matter.
Worse, light rain frequently makes the situation worse in the short term. A brief shower wets weeks of accumulated dust into a slurry, then evaporates, leaving hardened mud streaks running down each panel face and pooled along the low edge of the frame. Anyone who has looked at their array after the first light rain of the season has seen this.
And in the Central Valley the argument collapses on the calendar alone. From roughly April into October there is essentially no rain at all, and those are exactly the months your system produces the most. Relying on rain means accepting a steadily worsening array through the entire high-production season.
It is not just glass, and pressure is the fastest way to turn a cleaning into a repair bill.
The panel face carries an anti-reflective coating whose whole job is to get light into the cell rather than bouncing it off. Pressure and abrasion strip that coating, and once it is gone the panel produces less light permanently. Not until the next cleaning, permanently. Directed at the frame edges, pressure can also force water past the seal into the junction box or behind the laminate, which is an electrical problem you may not discover for months.
There is also thermal shock. Cold water hitting glass that has been baking on a Valley roof at 105 degrees is a genuine stress event. Solar work gets done early in the day, before the roof heats up, for that exact reason. The correct tools are a soft-bristle brush and low, controlled water flow.
Nobody sees most rooftop arrays, so the assumption is that cleaning them is vanity. The physics says otherwise. A photovoltaic cell converts the light that reaches it, and cell current falls almost in proportion to the light it receives. Anything on the glass that absorbs, reflects or scatters incoming light lowers output directly.
The stronger point is what concentrated soiling does. Cells are wired in series, so the least-lit cell limits current for the whole string. A single dropping shading part of one cell has an electrical effect out of all proportion to its size, and sustained shading generates localized heating that, over months, can cause micro-cracking and delamination in the laminate. At that point it is not soiling anymore; it is permanent damage. Cleaning is maintenance on a serious piece of equipment, not detailing.

This one is well-intentioned and actively counterproductive. Tap water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Sprayed on hot glass, the water evaporates and the minerals stay, bonding to the surface as scale. Scale scatters light, it does not rinse off, and rain will never remove it. Every subsequent tap-water rinse adds another layer, so the array gets progressively hazier the more diligently the owner rinses it.
The squeegee is its own problem: grit trapped under a rubber edge dragged across an anti-reflective coating leaves fine scratches. Professional solar work uses deionized or reverse-osmosis purified water, which has had the minerals removed and therefore dries completely clear, so no squeegee, no towel and no spots. If you are going to rinse between visits, use low pressure, do it early in the morning so it does not bake on, and understand you are removing loose dust only.
Cleaning done correctly does not void anything. Most panel manufacturers specify periodic cleaning in the owner's manual and state a permitted method: generally soft brushes or cloths, low pressure, and clean water, with harsh chemicals and abrasives prohibited.
What creates warranty problems is the wrong method: high pressure, abrasive pads, solvents, or walking on panels. So the practical advice is the opposite of the myth. Read the manufacturer's stated cleaning guidance in your manual, and make sure whoever you hire works within it. Neglecting maintenance the manual calls for is the riskier position, not the safer one.
Uniform soiling is genuinely hard to see from the ground, especially on a dark array viewed at a steep angle. By the time an array reads as visibly dirty from the driveway, it has usually been costing production for months.
There are two better tests. The first is a low-sun-angle look. Stand where you can see the panel faces early or late in the day. Clean glass reads dark and glossy; soiled glass reads flat and grey, and you will often see streaking down from the frames. The second, and far better, is your inverter app. Compare this month's production against the same month in previous years, and note the date of every cleaning. A seasonal decline through the dry months followed by a jump after a cleaning is soiling made visible in the data.
They do not, and the difference is visible in the finish. Ask two questions before hiring anyone: do you use deionized or purified water, and how do you handle bird droppings? The first tells you whether you will get scale spotting after the job. The second tells you whether they understand that dried droppings need dwell time and gentle agitation rather than scrubbing.
The third thing worth asking about is roof safety. A wet, pitched roof is a real hazard, and most residential arrays can be reached from the ground with a water-fed pole instead. A crew that defaults to poles where the geometry allows is a crew that has thought about the job.
