Two cleanings, placed correctly, cover the two moments when that accumulation peaks. The first goes in after the spring bloom, once tree and grass pollen have finished falling. Cleaning before pollen season ends just means paying to do it twice. The second goes in around early fall, at the end of the rainless stretch, when soiling is at its heaviest and there are still bright, high-production months left to benefit from the recovery.
The timing that people get wrong most often is the late-fall or early-winter cleaning. It feels tidy, clean everything before the holidays, but it is the lowest-value slot on the calendar. Winter sun angles are low, days are short, and incoming rain is about to do part of the job for free. If you are only paying for one cleaning a year, put it at the end of summer, not the end of the year.
Soiling is not one substance, and the mix on a Santa Clara roof is different from what settles on a rural array. Understanding what is on your glass tells you how often it needs to come off.
Traffic film. Homes near the 101, 880, Lawrence Expressway or a busy arterial pick up a fine, slightly oily particulate that behaves nothing like loose dust. It binds to glass, it is not dislodged by wind, and a plain hose rinse smears it rather than removing it. This is the single biggest reason urban arrays underperform expectations.

Bird droppings. The worst case by a wide margin, and a separate problem from dust. Droppings are acidic, they bond hard to glass as they dry, and they create concentrated shading rather than the even haze that dust produces. Concentrated shading is disproportionately damaging to output because a partially shaded cell drags down the string it sits in.
Overnight damp. Marine-influenced mornings leave dew on the glass. Dew wets the day's dust, then evaporates by mid-morning and leaves that dust cemented in place as a thin film. This cycle is why panels get dirtier faster than a flat, dry surface would.

You do not need to guess. Look for these, in roughly this order of reliability.
Stand where you can see the array at a low sun angle, early morning or late afternoon. Clean panel glass reads as dark and glossy; soiled glass reads as flat and hazy, and you will often see distinct streaking running down from the panel frames where water has channeled dust to the low edge. Visible white or grey droppings anywhere on the array mean it is overdue regardless of when you last had it done.
The stronger signal is in your monitoring app. Compare this month's production against the same month in prior years. A steady seasonal slide through the dry months followed by a bounce after cleaning is soiling, plainly visible in the data. If your system reports per-panel or per-optimizer output, one or two panels consistently trailing their neighbors usually means concentrated soiling on those specific panels, a dropping or a sap deposit.
The twice-a-year rule is a starting point, not a prescription. Your own production history will tell you whether your property is a one-, two- or three-cleaning site. Do this:

Method matters as much as frequency. Panel glass carries an anti-reflective coating that is engineered to be there for the life of the system, and it is not hard to damage. Three rules cover most of it.
No pressure. A pressure washer can force water past frame seals and into junction boxes, and it can strip coating. Solar cleaning is a low-flow, soft-brush operation, closer to window cleaning than to driveway work.
No hard tap water. Tap water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When it evaporates on hot glass, those minerals stay behind as scale. You end up with a panel that looks worse than before you started, and scale does not rinse off. Professional solar work uses deionized or purified water, which has had the minerals stripped out and therefore dries completely clear.
No abrasives and no household chemicals. Dried droppings need dwell time and gentle agitation, not scrubbing pads or solvents. Where plain purified water will not release a deposit, a panel-safe cleaning agent goes on first and is rinsed off completely.
Finally, roof safety. Wet glass on a pitched roof is genuinely dangerous, and most residential arrays can be reached from the ground or a ladder with a water-fed pole in the hands of someone who does it routinely. That is a real part of what you are buying when you hire out the work.
